About duVal Allen
Originally from New York City, duVal Allen left Norwich University (without graduating) six months before the United States declared war to serve in the ambulance corps of the French army. He served in the ambulance service of both the French and American armies, 1917-1919, ranking from a private to a 2nd lieutenant. His unit was much decorated, earning the Croix de Guerre, with four palms and three stars, and the Fourragere, shoulder cord, of the military medal. During World War II, Allen was a member of the Maryland state militia, 1943-1945, serving as a captain. He worked for the Maryland department of health from 1943 to 1966. duVal Allen married Esther King Stone and they had one daughter, Cassandra A. Taylor (b.1944), and a son, Charles Russell Leighton (b.1931).
