The collection contains both panoramic group photographs taken during Blanchette’s time as a student at Norwich, 1917-1922, and a photograph of the Norwich musical clubs. There is a World War I-era photograph of Fort Devonwood, and a large panoramic photograph of Blanchette’s 1940 graduating class at Georgetown University. Among the papers, is a pre-1913 school composition book as well as certificates, diplomas and degrees dating from 1917-1956. There is also Norwich University ephemera and handbooks dating from 1919-1921 as well as miscellaneous papers dated 1919 and 1941. Included are Blanchette’s published articles, 1932-1941, and his thesis for his civil engineering degree from Norwich, 1934.
About William Aldrich Blanchette
Originally from New Hampshire, William Blanchette attended Norwich University from 1917 to 1922, graduating with the class of 1922. While at Norwich, he was involved in university musical clubs and the band. Blanchette also earned a number of academic medals. On 4 February 1918, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and served until 27 June 1919 with the American Expeditionary Forces in France (Defensive Sector, Meuse Argonne Offensive, 603rd Engineers). Later, Blanchette worked as a civil engineer for forty years with the Bureau of Public Roads in Washington, DC, and published many articles in engineering periodicals between 1929 and 1959. He attended Georgetown University from 1936 to 1939, receiving his L.L.B. degree. Blanchette retired from federal government service in 1962 but continued to practice as both a civil engineer and attorney until 1968. He was married to Sadie A. Smith and the couple had three children. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on William Blanchette.

William Blanchette’s medals and other artifacts were transferred to the Sullivan Museum and History Center on 21 December 2009.
