The collection consists primarily of memorabilia from Allen Rice’s time as a student at Norwich University. Included are dance cards, sports programs and schedules, postcards, programs for special events and newspaper clippings. Also included are his military science and tactics course books for the 1924-1925 academic year and his Skull and Swords membership certificate, undated. There is also a panoramic photograph of the NU class of 1926. Allen Rice began a “memory book” with photographs, postcards and autographs of his friends during his time as a Norwich student but did not continue to add to it beyond including a few images of track events and Colonel Frank Tompkins.
About Allen Foster Rice
Allen Foster Rice, a civil engineering major from Brattleboro, Vermont, was a member of the Norwich University class of 1926. During his time on campus, he participated in football and track and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and the Skull and Swords. His thirty year career in the U.S. Army included service in both World War II and the Korean War. He received numerous military decorations for his service including the Legion of Merit. During his post-NU career, Allen Rice also served as professor of military science and tactics at the University of Massachusetts.
