About the Collection
The collection consists of a ledger containing transcriptions of some correspondence sent and received by the 9th New York Volunteers from July of 1861 through December of 1862. The bulk of the letters are official correspondence and orders between regimental leadership and the Adjutant General’s office in Albany reporting promotions, casualties, and other personnel-related issues. Several of the letters are written by, addressed to, or referring to Lieutenant Colonel Edgar A. Kimball, Norwich University Class of 1844.
About the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, also known as the 9th New York Volunteers or “Hawkins’ Zouaves,” was a volunteer infantry regiment fighting for the Union in the American Civil War. They engaged in seven major battles from 1861 to 1863. Among their commanders were Lieutenant Colonel Edgar A. Kimball, a Norwich University graduate from the Class of 1844, and Colonel Rush Hawkins, a Norwich honorary graduate and benefactor.
