About the Collection
The collection consists of a manuscript volume (288 pages) that is a cross between a memoir, scrapbook and photograph album. It contains Williston’s personal recollections primarily of his Civil War career but also including his post-war military service, pp.3-35, 220-227, 270-273 and 284-285. The volume also contains his writings, both published and unpublished, pp.50-68, 93-118, 228-229, and transcripts of documentation pertaining to the award of his Medal of Honor in 1892, pp.149-203. There are also many Civil War related photographs, including cartes de visite of comrades with biographical information or Williston’s personal recollections of them and/or their War service, pp.230-269. Finally, the manuscript includes a brief account of his Revolutionary War ancestors, pp. 286-287, and a list of his friends who committed suicide on p.288.
The manuscript was purchased at auction in 2013. Included with the volume is a file containing transcriptions of excerpts from the memoir as well as scanned images of sample pages. An auction catalog is also included.
About Edward Bancroft Williston
Edward Bancroft Williston (1836/37-1920) was a member of the class of 1856. He served with the 2nd U.S. Artillery throughout the Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1892 for distinguished gallantry at Trevilian Station, VA, in 1864. Following the Civil War he served in California, Texas, South Carolina and Texas and Alaska. He also served at armories in Massachusetts and New York. He retired from the service in 1900. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Edward B. Williston.

The Ebenezer Bancroft Williston Papers, 1787-1832, contain a Book of Common Prayer, 1831, with note dated 1850, that belonged to his son Edward Bancroft Williston.
Edward Williston Bancroft is the subject of a 2006 print by artist Dale Gallon entitled “For Distinguished Gallantry,” which was commissioned by Norwich University. The print depicts the Civil War battle at Trevilian Station, VA, on 12 June 1864, in which Edward Williston is featured. Edward Williston was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry during this action.
