About Thaddeus Buczko
Thaddeus Buczko, of Salem, MA, graduated from Norwich University in 1947. During World War II, he served aboard the U.S.S. Hiram Bearss. This destroyer, as part of Task Force 92 in the Aleutian Islands Theater, was engaged in bombardment of the northernmost islands of Japan. In action near the Kurile Islands, the squadron fired what would be the last shots of World War II. On 7 September 1945, the U.S.S. Bearss transferred high ranking Japanese officials to the flagship of Vice Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher for the signing of official papers in advance of the occupation of northern Japan. Buczko also served during the Korean War as a unit tank commander and the Assistant Division Staff Judge Advocate with the Third Armored Division. Thaddeus Buczko later became Massachusetts State Auditor. The control file and post-war news items file within the collection contain additional biographical information on Thaddeus Buckzo.
