About the Collection
The collection contains letters to Elijah Hubbard from his parents and friends, 1823-1833, as well as a letter from Elijah’s father to President Day of Yale University, 1830. There are miscellaneous papers relating to Alden Partridge, 1826-1827, and to Middlebury College, 1831-1832, as well as assorted bills and receipts, 1828-1833. Also included are essays and speeches, 1825-1836. For a more detailed description, see the content listing. The control file included with the collection also contains item-level inventories and references which letters mention Alden Partridge or the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy. Photocopies of original documents are also available with the collection.
About Elijah Kent Hubbard
Elijah Kent Hubbard was born in Middletown, CT, and attended school in West Haven, CT. From May 1826 until August 1827, he attended the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University), which was then located in Middletown, CT. After leaving the Academy, Hubbard studied law at Yale University until 1830. In 1831, he enrolled in Middlebury College and received his degree from that institution in 1832. In 1834, Hubbard married Elizabeth De Koven of Middletown, CT, and shortly thereafter the couple moved to Chicago. Elijah Hubbard was a successful dealer in real estate and chartered the Galena and Chicago Railroad, the first railroad built west of Chicago.
