About the Collection
The collection consists of two letters and a partial letter written by Charles A. Hoyt from Norwich University to his parents in Deerfield, MA. The letters are dated 25 May and 9 June 1861, while the partial letter contains no date. The letters contain details of life at Norwich during the Civil War from the logistics of settling into barracks and getting uniformed, to details of expenses, course of study, bed bugs and NU President Bourns’ personality. There is interesting information about cadets acting as State drillmasters and of various Vermont companies passing through Norwich on the way to encampment in St. Johnsbury. The collection also contains transcriptions of each item.
About Charles Arthur Hoyt
Charles A. Hoyt of Deerfield, MA, was a member of the Norwich University class of 1863. He was the son of Elizabeth Henry and Arthur Wellesley Hoyt. He has sometimes been confused with Civil War soldier, Captain Charles A. Hoyt (born ca. 1826) of Company C, 24th Michigan Infantry, a unit of the famed Iron Brigade. According to census records, Captain Charles A. Hoyt of the 24th Michigan Infantry was married and living in Livonia, Michigan, with his wife and three children by 1860. Charles Arthur Hoyt of Deerfield, MA, continued as a student at Norwich University through the beginning of the 1862-1863 academic year but does appear to have graduated with his class in 1863.
