About the Collection
The collection includes letters written by Samuel L. Pitkin from the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy to his parents, Samuel and Sarah Pitkin, and his sister, Frances Pitkin, in Connecticut, 20 May-25 October 1822, as well as four undated pages of diagrams of military maneuvers. Also included is earlier correspondence with his parents during what might have been an apprenticeship to a hatter in Windham, VT, 1816-1817. The collection includes the journal of a trip from East Hartford, CT, to Niagara, NY, in 1824. In the letters written during Pitkin’s time as a student at the Academy, he describes life as a cadet under Alden Partridge and in Norwich, VT. He provides lengthy descriptions of pedestrian excursions to Concord, NH, and to Montpelier, VT. There is an undated exhibit file on the Samuel L. Pitkin collection also included. Typed transcriptions and photocopies of the original letters are available with the collection.
About Samuel Leonard Pitkin
Samuel Leonard Pitkin, from East Hartford, CT, entered the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy (forerunner of Norwich University) in 1821 and graduated in 1823. Later he was involved in the dry goods business, the manufacture of gunpowder, and banking. Pitkin also served in the Connecticut State Militia from 1823-1838, rising to the rank of major general. He served as Adjutant General of the State of Connecticut from 1838-1844 and was active in state and local politics. He married Mary Ann Lewis (d. 1891) in 1831. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Samuel L. Pitkin.
