About the Collection
The collection consists primarily of prints and negatives produced and/or collected by an unknown individual (or individuals) believed to be a member of the Norwich University class of 1914. These photographs document campus activities and people during the period, 1910-1914, with particular attention to the years 1911 and 1912. Subjects represented in the collection include the band, campus buildings and grounds, football, the hike and camp at Fort Ethan Allen in 1911, general military training, parades and drills (including some in Montpelier and Barre), portraits of cadets and portraits of cadet guests, particularly young women, the small pox camp and quarantine in 1912, surveying, cars and other transportation, and the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity (both the building and group shots of members).
Frank Clyde Dunham of North Bennington, Vt., is identified as the subject of some of the images. During his time as a Norwich student, Dunham participated in band, orchestra, and glee club and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Fraternity photographs in the collection focus almost entirely on Sigma Phi Epsilon, of which members from the class of 1914 included Frank Dunham, Ralph Ernest Brierly, Walter Arthur Gilmour, Lewis Barker McVicker, William Henry Munsell, Joseph Moore Pierce, and Robert Homer Wilson. Some photos also appear to be signed “Finley” or “J. Finley” and may be attributed to Alden Elman Finley, a member of the journalistic association from the class of 1914. One photograph of Camp “Gov. Mead” at Fort Ethan Allen in September 1911 was reprinted in the Reveille in October 1911; at that time, all members of the editorial board for the Reveille belonged to the class of 1914.
