Creator Lippincott, Clifford Ellwood, 1917-2010 Title Clifford Ellwood Lippincott Papers Dates 1935-2015, Bulk: 1935-1983 Extent 1 Box (1 linear foot) About the Collection The collection includes papers and photographs, 1938-1983 (bulk), primarily reflecting Clifford E. Lippincott’s service in the U. S. Army both overseas and in the United States and in his later position as Registrar at Norwich University. Included in these chronological files are papers and ephemera, ca.1950s, from South Korea and Japan. While at Fort Leavenworth (Kansas), ca.1956-1960, Clifford Lippincott was active in the Dramatic Club; programs and photographs of these activities are included There are three photograph albums containing both prints and negatives representing candid shots taken during his time in the U.S. Army depicting Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, etc., ca.1940-1948. Among the photographs are those depicting military personnel, most of which are signed. Also included are oversized materials including commissions and certificates dated 1935 (rolled), 1939 (rolled), 1940-1967 (all flat), including his award of the Bronze Star Medal in 1954. These oversized items will be found in OSD 2.4.
Finally, there is a memory book celebrating the lives of Clifford and Maureen Lippincott, compiled by Gordon Barrass in 2014-2015 (includes CD-ROM).
About Clifford E. Lippincott
Clifford E. Lippincott, originally from Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, received his BSc degree in landscape architecture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1939. During World War II he served as a U.S. Army intelligence officer in campaigns in North Africa and Italy as well as in the European theater. He served with the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized, which was a unit within the 91st Infantry Division. Following the war Clifford Lippincott was posted in Germany and later served with the Eighth Army in Korea and with the
First RB&L Group in Japan from 1952 to 1954. Subsequent postings included Fort Leavenworth (Kansas) Fort Shafter (Hawaii) and finally Norwich University. On his retirement from the Army in 1967, he assumed the position of Registrar at Norwich University until his retirement in 1983. Colonel Lippincott married Maureen O’Brien and the couple had two children. Eventually moving from Northfield, VT, to Pelham, MA, in 1986, Colonel Lippincott passed away in 2010. The control file included with the collection contains additional information on the life and service of Clifford E. Lippincott.
