About the Collection
The collection consists of the preamble, confederation and constitution of the Amphictyon association at Norwich University dated 21 May 1846. The Amphictyon/Amphictyonic association is incorrectly referred to as the Amethyteton and Amethyleton Society in William Arba Ellis’s published history of Norwich (pp. 123, 484). Ellis writes that the Society was organized in 1847 to raise money to pay for a portrait of Truman B. Ransom and that several entertainments were given by the group for that purpose. Jesse A. Gove served as president and Charles Ensworth as treasurer. A Mr. Darling of Vermont was secured to paint the portrait and, when completed, it was presented by the cadets to the Norwich trustees. See Ellis’s history, p. 123, and the control file included with the collection for additional history of the painting. Also included in the collection are notes and accounts relative to inheritances of those who employed Vogell as attorney, 1848-1849, including his quest to find the heirs of John Vogell.
