About the Collection
The collection contains sketches of a regular fortification, with instructions for construction, probably executed during Kent’s studies at Norwich University, ca. 1852 (in OSD2.2). There are also song sheets with lyrics for songs written by Henry Kent, including “The Old South Barracks, Oh” (1855) “Hurrah for Old NU!” (1886) (in OSD3.4), and Kent’s article, “Songs of N.U.” from The Granite Monthly (1899). Also included is Kent’s address to the Grand Army of the Republic encampment in Concord, NH, on 12 April 1905, and his remarks at the formal presentation of Alumni Hall to Norwich University. There is also a typed transcription of a poem by Kent to the cadets of Norwich, dated 1855.
About Henry Oakes Kent
Henry O. Kent, a native of Lancaster, NH, graduated from Norwich University in 1854. He was a member of the University Regulators and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and was an organizer of the Alumni Association in 1860. Kent acted as a trustee of Norwich University from 1854 to 1909. He served in the Civil War and was active in local, state (New Hampshire) and national politics. He married Bernice Adaline Rowell in 1859 and the couple had two children. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Henry Oakes Kent.
