About the Collection
The collection consists of a photograph album containing photographs of the dedication of the American war memorials in Europe in 1937, including several of Gibson himself. The album was compiled by the American Battle Monuments Commission. Also included is a memorial sketch of Ernest Gibson prepared by Orrin B. Hughes for the Vermont Bar Association, October 1940, and a speech by his son, Ernest William Gibson, on selective compulsory military service delivered in the U.S. Senate on 24 August 1940.
About Ernest Willard Gibson
Ernest W. Gibson began a life of service to Vermont and his country as a cadet at Norwich University, graduating with the class of 1894. After completing his law degree at the University of Michigan, Gibson returned to Vermont and opened a law practice in Brattleboro in 1899. He served in the Vermont legislature from 1906-1910. As a member of the Vermont National Guard, Gibson fought in France with the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. On his return, he continued serving Vermont as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1923-1933 and as senator from 1933-1940. He was a trustee of Norwich University from 1899-1909 and again from 1919-1935. He received an honorary MA degree from Norwich in 1904 and a doctorate of literature from his alma mater in 1926. Upon Ernest Willard Gibson’s death, his son, Ernest William Gibson (1901-1969), a member of the Norwich University class of 1923, filled his senate seat.
