The collection consists of a scrapbook and ephemera that document Allen Wilder’s post-Norwich military career during the 1940s. Topics of interest in the scrapbook include war exercises in Louisiana, with many candid photographs of soldiers and news articles. The papers include a booklet about the First Armored Division and its internal news publication “Old Ironsides.” One booklet includes a guide for behavior of soldiers serving in North Africa, especially regarding cultural norms.
About Allen Stanton Wilder
Allen S. Wilder, born in Weathersfield, VT, was Track Scrub Manager and a member of Delta Sigma Tau fraternity while at Norwich University. He entered the Army in 1940 and served in the First Armored Division with General Harmon in the African and Italian campaigns of WWII. He was recalled to active service in 1949 and was posted in Japan during the Korean War. Over the next 28 years, he served in advisory posts, including on the General Staff, U.S. Advisory group–Vietnam, until his retirement in 1965. He moved to Florida where he taught school for seven years. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Allen S. Wilder.
