About Henry Weismann
Henry Weismann was born in Germany and came to San Francisco as a youth where he worked as a baker. For a time he was a member of the socialist labor party and later of the anti-coolie league of California, a group opposed to Chinese immigration. In 1890, he came to New York and was active in the bakers union. He became a lawyer in 1903 and served as county clerk of Kings County. Throughout 1915-1918 Weismann was much in the news as president of the New York and Brooklyn branches of the German-American alliance. After the entry of the United States into World War I, Weismann proclaimed his loyalty to America and was active in urging support of the cause. He was a significant German-American leader during World War I and an active labor leader and was frequently in the center of bitter wartime controversies. A prominent republican and friend of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, Weismann was an eloquent orator. He was married three times. His son, Henry Conrad Weismann, Jr., graduated with the Norwich University class of 1942 and his great grandson, Robert Gehring, with the class of 2007. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Henry Weismann. Search Terms
