About the Collection
The collection consists of portions of Ellis’s manuscript for his published history of Norwich University, including his notes and references. The collection also includes a file of miscellaneous correspondence, 1909-1974, pertaining to the preparation and publication of the university history. There is a copy of Ellis’s article, “Technical Education at Norwich University,” which was published in Expansion, a Vermont industry periodical, in April 1904. His published history, Norwich University, 1819-1911: Her History, Her Graduates, Her Roll of Honor, 1898 and 1911, is available in both the general Kreitzberg library collection and in special collections.
About William Arba Ellis
William Ellis graduated with the Norwich University class of 1897. He was a member of the Alpha Sigma Pi fraternity and editor of the Reveille. He served as librarian from 1902 to 1908 and later went on to a career with the New York Public Library. Ellis is best known for his three-volume history of Norwich University. He began this monumental research project in 1894 and commenced writing the manuscript in 1897. The first volume was published in 1898, with the three-volume expanded edition published in 1911.
