Creator Frost, Robert, 1874-1963 Title The Gold Hesperidee (by Robert Frost) Collection Dates 1935 and 1979 Extent 2 Files About the Collection
The Gold Hesperidee Collection was compiled by the poem’s publisher, Earle W. Newton, and later (1998) sold to Norwich University Special Collections. Earle Newton had served as an adjunct professor in the Humanities Department at Norwich. Earle W. Newton was a student at Amherst College when Robert Frost was Poet in Residence there. His friendly acquaintance with the famous poet led to Frost entrusting Newton with the publication of this poem. With its various states and bindings, this item has an interesting but often confusing, publication history.
The collection consists of three variant copies of The Gold Hesperidee (2 states) with 3 variant bindings, as well as correspondence between its publisher, Earle W. Newton, and those attempting to clarify the printing sequence of the poem. Correspondents include Charles R. Green, Robert S. Newdick and Newton F. McKeon. There are two pages of Newton’s handwritten notes about the poem’s publication and photocopies of pages within published Frost bibliographies pertaining to The Gold Hesperidee, including those by Wesleyan University (1936), Clymer and Green (1937), Clarke (1974), Crane (1974), and Latham (1974). There is also a copy of the Clymer and Green bibliography containing Earle Newton’s handwritten notes. Two postal cards announcing the publication of The Gold Hesperidee on 28 July 1935 and two loose copies of pp. [1-2] and 7-8 (2nd state) are also in the collection. Special Collections purchased a number of first editions of Frost’s poetry, many of them inscribed to Earle Newton. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical and bibliographical information on Robert Frost.
