About George A. Lansell
George A. Lansell was born in England in 1886 and came to Vermont in 1910. He worked for Norwich University as a custodian and grounds keeper from 1925 until his retirement in the mid-1960s. His wife Edith worked at the Ainsworth Infirmary. George Lansell had been a gardener in England. He planted much of the English ivy that adorns many campus buildings as well as the flowering crab trees that grace the lower campus. A talented photographer, George Lansell took numerous photographs of the Norwich campus. He hand-colored his photographs with oil paint for a beautiful effect and frequently sold them to cadets. According to Lansell’s daughter, George often commented that he put his son and daughter through college with the money he made from hand-tinting photographs. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on George Arthur Lansell.
