About Frederick C. Miller
Frederick Charles Miller was born in England on 3 February 1858. He and his family later emigrated to Canada. He joined the Nile Expedition, also known as the Gordon Relief Expedition, on 9 September 1884, retuning home to Ottawa on 12 March 1885. The expedition is described in full in Winston Churchill’s The River War, originally published in 1899. From the back cover of the 2006 republication of Churchill’s work, we learn that “After the 1881 rebellion of the Mahdi had plunged the Sudan into chaos, British attempts to withdraw from the region climaxed in General Gordon’s ill-fated attempt to rescue officials, soldiers, and Egyptian subjects from Khartoum.” (Mineola, NY: Dover Publications, 2006). The Nile Voyageurs were civilian Canadians who enlisted to help British forces navigate their boats up the Nile. After the death of his first wife, Miller moved to New York City, became a cheese merchant and eventually remarried. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information on Frederick C. Miller. Search Terms
