The collection consists of drafts and galley proofs of several of William E. Butterworth’s novels, 1987-1991. In alphabetical order they are: The Aviators (1987-1988, 17 files, Boxes 1-2), Battleground (1990, 21 files, Box 4), Call to Arms (1987, 5 files, Box 5), Counterattack (1989, 11 files, Box 6), Honor Bound (3 files, Box 3), Line of Fire (1991, 12 files, Box 5), Men in Blue (1987-1991, 9 files, Boxes 6-7), The New Breed (1987-1988, 20 files, Boxes 2-3), Secret Honor (floppy discs only, Box 3), and Special Operations (1988-1989, 3 files, Box 7). Both Special Collections and the general Kreitzberg Library collection hold copies of some of William Butterworth’s published books.
About William Edmund Butterworth
William Butterworth, better known by his pen name W.E.B. Griffin, has written more than 100 books printed in more than ten languages. He was born in Newark, NJ, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946. He received counter-intelligence training at Fort Holabird, MD, and was assigned to the Army of Occupation in Germany, serving under Major General I. D. White (Norwich University class of 1922). Recalled to active duty during the Korean War, Butterworth again served under General White, both at Fort Knox and in Korea. On his release from active duty, he was appointed chief of the publications division at the Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, AL. William Butterworth, with Carlo D’Este (Norwich University class of 1958) founded the William E. Colby Military Writers Symposium. Butterworth was given an honorary doctor of military literature degree by Norwich University in 1987.
