About the Collection
The collection consists primarily of biographical information on Roger Strong Howard, president of Norwich University, 1869-1871, including the correspondence of William Arba Ellis, 1910, as he prepared Howard’s sketch for his published history of Norwich University, 1819-1911. Also included are newspaper clippings, 1869-1871, pertaining to the hiring, resignation and tenure of Howard as president of Norwich. Some cadet activities, such as decoration day and a march to Montpelier are also represented in the clippings. Clippings regarding the 1870 and 1871 commencement activities were removed to the commencement vertical files for those years. There is also a photograph of Howard with the collection.
About Roger Strong Howard
Roger Strong Howard was born in Thetford, VT, and died in Greenfield, MA. He was an 1829 graduate of Dartmouth College. Howard worked as a school principal from 1829 to 1856. He also studied for the Episcopal ministry, was ordained in 1856, and served as rector in Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. He was elected president of Norwich University on 8 January 1869 and assumed his duties in September. He resigned on 27 November 1871 to reenter the ministry but continued to serve as trustee until 1876. He married first, in 1831, Martha Pike and a daughter was born to them. After the death of his first wife, Roger Howard married Charlotte P. Jewett (d. 1892) in 1861.
