About the Collection
The collection includes records documenting William Dewey's time at Norwich University, including grade reports and schedules (1858-1863), receipts (1859-1863), letters (1857-1862), compositions (1859-1863) and Norwich degrees (1863-BS and 1909-AM) (degrees in OSD2.3). The collection also contains Dewey's 1862 discharge from the 7th Squadron Rhode Island Cavalry as well as a brief history of this unit, which was also known as the "College Cavaliers."
About William Strong Dewey
William Dewey of Quechee, VT, graduated from Norwich University in 1863. Following his graduation he pursued a career in the manufacture of woolen goods. In 1862, during the Civil War, he took part in enrolling in the "College Cavaliers," which became Company B, 7th Squadron, Rhode Island Volunteer Cavalry. Dewey was presented an honorary A. M. degree by Norwich University in 1909. The control file included with the collection contains additional biographical information.
