About James Davie Butler
James D. Butler was born in Rutland, VT, and died in Madison, WI. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1836 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1840. He served in various Congregational churches in Vermont, Massachusetts and Ohio. From September 1854 to 1857, Butler served as professor of ancient languages and English literature at Norwich University. Upon Truman Ransom’s resignation in March 1846, Butler served as acting president until August 1847. He returned to Norwich in 1850 as professor of modern languages and belles-lettres and remained one year. He later worked at universities in Indiana and Wisconsin. James Butler was a prolific writer and lecturer and traveled widely. He married Anna Bates (d.1892) in 1845 and the couple had six children. The collection contains additional information on the life and career of James Davie Butler.
