About the Collection
The collection includes biographical information on Malcolm Douglass, president of Norwich University, 1871-1875, including the correspondence of William Arba Ellis in preparation for his published sketch of Douglass, 1910-1912. Also included is a letter from Malcolm Douglass to Josiah Hale of Newburyport, MA, in which President Douglass details the state of affairs at Norwich University as of 3 June 1873. This letter contains mention of Douglass’s impressions upon first coming to Norwich. A typed transcription of this letter is available.
About Malcolm Douglass
Malcolm Douglass was born in West Point, NY, and died in Wareham, MA. He graduated from Trinity College in 1842. Douglass served in churches throughout New York and in Windsor, VT. He was elected to the presidency of Norwich University on 27 November 1871 and also held the professorship of intellectual philosophy and Christian ethics. Malcolm Douglass resigned as president on 12 April 1875 but continued to serve as trustee until 1877. He married Sarah Elizabeth Hale in 1851 and six children were born to them. The collection itself contains additional information on the life and career of Malcolm Douglass.

The collection includes a copy of the finding aid to the King-Hale-Douglass family papers, 1789-1913, held by the Massachusetts Historical Society. The finding aid was sent to the Norwich University Archives in 2002.
